The First Black Students at Dartmouth
Black students have been enrolled at Dartmouth beginning with Caleb Watts, a member of the Class of 1775. Not much is known about Watts or his future after leaving campus. However, after he left, Dartmouth did not admit black students to every subsequent class. The next black graduate of the school was Prince Saunders, Class of 1808. Below is a list of the black students who graduated from Dartmouth through the 19th century.[i] Click on each image to read the students’ biographies on the archive.
