The Creation of the Afro-American Society
The Afro-American Society was formed in the 1960s when four students got together to form an organization aimed at supporting African American students at Dartmouth. The four students were Woody Lee ’68, C. Siddah Webber ’69, Dennis Young ’69, and Keith Jackson ’70. The organization was officially recognized by the College in 1969 and has been an active organization ever since. Dartmouth had very few black students in the 1960s, and creating the Afro-American Society was meant to foster a sense of community among the black students who otherwise felt isolated on campus.
